Principal Brian Annello

Mr. Annello was a Mathematics teacher at Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School 74 in Bayside, Queens for eight years. He then served as an Assistant Principal at Middle School 74 for five years. As an Assistant Principal, Brian supervised the Mathematics, Arts, Physical Education, and Health departments at the school. He graduated from Saint John’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. He was also licensed in Mathematics grades 7-12 upon graduation from St. John’s. Then, he earned a Master of Science in Mathematics: Secondary Education. He later became licensed both as a School Building Leader and School District Leader through his studies at Long Island University on the CW Post Campus. The Math team he coached finished in third in New York State at the State Mathcounts competition in both 2008 and 2009.

Mr. Annello's experiences as a Math teacher and Math Team coach shaped his view that engaging and challenging students leads them on paths to developing loves for learning. He believes communication and collaboration among all members of the school community lead to success and a supportive learning environment for all students. Brian is the proud father of a daughter named Emma, and his wife, Laura, is a Special Education teacher. He enjoys spending time with his family and watching and playing sports in his spare time.

Assistant Principal Maria Lam

Ms. Lam comes to us from a city-wide teacher leadership coaching position because she loves learning from teachers and their passions for their content and students. In the coaching role, she supported teachers in opening lab classrooms, facilitating team meetings, designing professional learning, and peer coaching. Prior to becoming a coach, she served as a High School English Teacher for 9 years in the Philadelphia and New York public school system. In and outside the classroom, she thoroughly enjoyed supporting students to develop their voice through performing original poetry at Nuyorican Cafe or advocating for school/community needs through their literary magazine submissions and fashion show fundraisers. During her summers, she likes teaching in other spaces: ESL abroad (China/Korea), 826NYC (student films), Youth Voices (student blogs and voicethreads), and SAT prep. In her leisure time, she researches new school models (XQ Superschool Project), scopes out neighborhood eats with her friends and family, scans artwork at galleries and museums, and volunteers for NYCares. She firmly believes that every child is capable of incredible contributions when given the opportunities. At MS67q, she hopes to serve the vibrant learning community with a positive and collaborative spirit.
